The construction sector accounted for nearly a third of deaths at work in 2008/2009, latest statistics released by the Health and Safety Executive today reveal.
In total there were 180 workers fatally injured in the 12 months ending March 2009 - equivalent to a rate of 0.6 fatalities per 100 000 workers - and of those, 53 occurred in the construction sector.
