Minister plans renewed health and safety focus
A review of New Zealand’s Workplace Health and Safety Strategy has identified key areas where work is needed to reduce workplace deaths and accidents, says Minister of Labour Kate Wilkinson.
“I have been concerned at the toll in our workplaces and last year’s fatalities report along with this review serve to highlight that we need to work harder with high risk industries, notably construction, agriculture and forestry,” Ms Wilkinson says.

FATIGUE is the number one accident risk factor for construction workers and requires better recognition by occupational health and safety managers, research at the University of Sydney has found. Margaret Chan’s PhD research focused on four high profile oil and gas Sino joint-venture construction projects in Mainland China, where she interviewed workers, managers and safety supervisors to establish perceived causes of workplace accidents. All three groups considered fatigue to be the most significant risk factor in workplace accidents at these sites.

Last year alone, 21 construction workers died while on the job. They died in a variety of horrendous ways, from being struck by falling objects, accidentally cut by machinery, electrocuted, or crushed between vehicles.

Construction and Allied Workers’ Union general secretary Mr Nicholas Mazarura said many workers in the sector are denied safety clothes.
